Jul. 11th, 2007 12:20 pmHad about the usual experience at the club. (That means I didn't win my direction). No real play problems, though the opps made an anti-field lead against pard's 3N so he made 600 instead of 690. We missed first by 1.5 matchpoints, btw. We did see some interesting auctions, though.
1) The opps had the following, uncontested auction.
1D-1H, 1N-3N, 4C-4H, 4N-5D, 5N-P
If you guess opener's hand, I'll give you a big, wet kiss.
2) 1st, none, you hold a 2=4=5=2 weak NT.
Due to system constraints, you open 1C.
1C-2S-P-P, ?
You only have a doubleton club, so you can't afford to balance with a double.
Think about that! You have 5-4 in the unblid suits, and you CANNOT afford to balance with a takeout double!
3) 2nd, favorable, JT9xxxx - xx K8xx
Pard had KQ AJT98 Jx AT9x. I learned long ago, from The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin, that it's useless to know the answer to the wrong question. Bearing that in mind:
Jo: Did you get to game on board 22?
Len: Yes, of course.
Jo: How did you get to four?
Len: 1D-3H-P-4H, P-P-P
Jo: No, you had spades.
Len: What's your point? -250
The opps alerted 1D, may be short. I checked, and they're playing precision. We play suction over a precision 1C and, after a long day at work, I...lost focus briefly. I intended 3H as a transfer. Ah well. Down five is good bridge.
